In order to limit the growth of milk supply in Europe, and also to reorientate the trends in technical development, many recent proposals have been based on a change in the milk pricing system. The authors have studied the possible consequences of alternative milk pricing policies on a sample of milk farms in the west of France, and in the EEC. They show that no formula is capable of obtaining both supply control and substantial redistribution of farmer's income. There is no miracle answer within the pricing system alone : it must be integrated into a general policy.
