Abstract

To promote farming efficiency an integrated farm planning approach was applied in the Kroonstad area of South Africa during the early 1980's. Using linear programming, 29 farm plannings were carried out. Two years after completion of the last planning a research project was conducted to determine the extent of plan implementation; reasons for deviations from planning proposals; and guidelines for future planning endeavours. The main conclusions drawn from the research were: Significant differences in extent of implementation occurred between years and farming activities. Factors responsible for deviations from planning proposals include climate, economic factors, factors concerning the execution of planning and diverse factors. Various proposals could be made to improve the integrated planning approach.
