Major new technologies will become available to farmers around the world in the last decade of this century which will provide opportunities for an increase in production efficiency unequalled in history. These new technolgies are likely to be available in areas such as: growth hormones for livestock; computer expert systems for crop and livestock management; biological control of insects and diseases; controlled traffic farming; naturally occurring chemicals to control weeds; and on-farm local- area-networks (LAN's) utilising computers, sensors and other electronic devices to monitor, control, and analyse both production and management processes. The impact of these rapidly developing technologies will require a very high lelvel of expertise in farm management for farming to remain profitable.
