The rural population under the current poverty line has decreased by739.9 million. China has to more than 70 per cent of world poverty reduction. To better promote the new anti-poverty strategy and to serve as a reference for poverty alleviation in other developing countries, this paper summarises the main experiences of China’s poverty alleviation over the past 40 years and then discusses the challenges associated with implementing the targeted poverty alleviation policy in the new era. China’s experience with poverty alleviation includes developmentoriented poverty alleviation, improving self-development capabilities of the poor population, encouraging multiple subjects to participate in poverty alleviation and focusing on innovation and ways to improve poverty alleviation. Although China’s poverty alleviation initiatives have achieved significant successes, there are still several challenges that should be of concern in the coming years, such as the diminishing marginal effect of financial inputs on poverty alleviation, the resulting negative incentives for the poor to improve their internal motivations and the insufficient participation of markets and social forces in poverty alleviation. Given these challenges, this paper provides suggestions for anti-poverty policies beyond 2020. 000333893 546__ $$aEnglish 000333893 650__ $$aFood Security and Poverty 000333893 6531_ $$achallenges 000333893 6531_ $$aChina 000333893 6531_ $$apoverty alleviation 000333893 700__ $$aLiu, Mingyue 000333893 700__ $$aFeng, Xiaolong 000333893 700__ $$aWang, Sangui 000333893 700__ $$aQiu, Huanguang 000333893 773__ $$j64$$k01$$q209$$o228$$tAustralian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics 000333893 8560_ $$fselst010@umn.edu 000333893 8564_ $$9368c5add-364b-492f-82e3-6e581a62b036$$s622895$$uhttps://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/333893/files/ajar12353.pdf 000333893 909CO $$ooai:ageconsearch.umn.edu:333893$$pGLOBAL_SET 000333893 913__ $$aBy depositing this Content ('Content') in AgEcon Search, I agree that I am solely responsible for any consequences of uploading this Content to AgEcon Search and making it publicly available, and I represent and warrant that: I am either the sole creator and the owner of the copyrights and all other rights in the Content; or, without obtaining another’s permission, I have the right to deposit the Content in an archive such as AgEcon Search.
