Abstract
Excerpts from the report Introduction: This bulletin presents cereal statistics developed to provide a comparable long-term series of data for use by researchers, administrators, exporters, and others interested in the world grain supply. A four-part table is included for each of 117 countries, the world, and 10 major geographic regions of the world. Each table consists of grain area, yield, production, and production per person and includes, where applicable, wheat, rye, rice, corn, barley, oats, millet, sorghums, and other grains (mainly buckwheat and mixed grains). Regional and world totals are limited to those countries included in the publication. The country names used in the report do not imply any legal or constitutional status of territory or title. They are used to identify certain geographic land areas without any limitations to administrative or legal boundaries. Statistics used are primarily those published by the governments of each country. Other sources of statistics and information were used when published data from official governmental sources were not available. A major secondary source of statistics was provided through agricultural attaches of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and economic counselors of the U.S. Department of State assigned to U.S. embassies and consulates in foreign countries. Cereal statistics published by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in conjunction with published and unpublished data from other international organizations were used to fill some gaps. Where no data were available in some years for a few countries, estimates were made to complete the 26 year series.
