Excerpts: The attached tables present indices of agricultural production for 28 countries of Africa and constitute a revision of the indices that were published by the Foreign Agricultural Service in November 1960. Appearing this year for the first time are separate indices for Dahomey, Republic of Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. As in the previous study, these indices have been calculated on a postwar base (average 1952/53 - 1954/55). For the countries in Northern Africa production data for 1958/59, 1959/60, and 1960/61 have been revised to incorporate more recent refinements in crop estimates, and those for 1961/62 have been added. In a few instances revisions in the data for the base period were also made. For the countries in Southern Africa production data for 1957/58, 1958/59, and 1959/60 have been revised and those for 1960/61 have been added. Data for the prewar period (1935-39) is included for Northern Africa but is omitted from Southern Africa due to the general lack of information.
