This study is the second phase of the El Nino study which was undertaken by the CGPRT Centre in five vulnerable countries namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Papua New Guinea. The first phase of the El Nino study did not fully reveal the extent of El Nino impacts on production at the farm level, what efforts are undertaken by farmers to reduce possible production decline and what constraints are faced by farmers to implement efficient coping mechanisms. El Nino impacts on household food security, mitigation efforts applied by farmers to overcome their consumption problems and the role of local institutions or the local government in handling the consequences of El Nino were also neglected by the first phase of the study. Accordingly, the second phase focuses on these problems. In general, this study focuses on two subjects: (1) Impact assessment of El Nino at the farm level and household level, and (2) Assessment of coping mechanisms applied by farmers, the local community and the local government in particularly vulnerable areas to El Nino. This study was focused in Lampung Tengah, Indonesia. Four closely located villages in Kecamatan Gunung Sugih in the district of Lampung Tengah were selected as research sites, they are the villages of Binjai Agung, Kedatuan, Trimulyo and Tanjung Pandan.
