Abstract

New technologies and continuing research have poised American agriculture on the threshold of a new technological era. Genetic engineering and improvements in plant and animal breeding promise new high-yield plants and animals. Innovations in chemistry promise higher crop yields and improved treatment of animal diseases. New machines and equipment will significantly increase farm size and efficiency. To be implemented, however, the new technologies will have to demonstrate their efficacy and safety, as well as overcome some regulatory constraints.
