Abstract

Excerpts from the report Introduction: Ramie was introduced into the United States from the Orient about 1855. Since that time it has been tried experimentally in most of the Southern States. Need for a crop to supplement vegetables and livestock in the Florida Everglades has created a wide interest in that area in recent years in the production of ramie. This publication reports on the progress that has been made at the Everglades Experiment Station in developing machinery for large-scale production of ramie in the Florida Everglades, including methods and machinery for central-station decortication and degumming of ramie fiber.
