Excerpts from the report Introduction: The purpose of this survey was to provide information about consumer preferences and practices with regard to deciduous fruits. Apples were selected as the chief subject but attention was given to fresh and commercially prepared apple products. Winter pears were included in the survey. Apple growers, local and national farm groups, and distributors, should find these data of assistance in future planning. An understanding of how apples are used and how and why homemakers select their apples will throw light on the general problem of trying to increase consumption in the years to come. With these ends in mind, the survey was planned around two major aims: To learn the purposes for which apples are bought and used by homemakers and to measure the considerations which influence homemakers' selections of apples.
