Per capita deliveries of caloric sweeteners declined 2.6 percent in 2018. This continues a longer downward trend beginning in 1999. Recent years have seen an acceleration, however, as deliveries for refined sugar have flattened. Since the mid-2000s, per capita refined increased due to substitution by food manufacturers away from corn sweeteners, such as high-fructose corn-syrup. The market for caloric sweeteners has not kept up with population growth, resulting in flat growth for the caloric sweetener sector.
