Abstract

Lesotho depends heavily on migratory employment in South African mines. In the mid-Seventies a rapid increase in mine wages sharply altered opportunity costs to Lesotho's farm households. Significant adjustments followed in cropping, livestock management and labor resource allocation, each of which affects long-term development potential.
