Abstract

A model is developed and estimated via logit analysis to explain motor carrier full/empty movement decisions. Data is employed regarding the southbound movements of motor carriers toward Florida to pick up produce and ornamentals. The results indicate that carriers consider a wide range of factors when making such decisions. These include expected rate and demand changes at remote destinations, search costs, and commitments for future loads.
