Abstract

Specialization that results from comparative advantage in the production of homogeneous and differentiated -products is used to derive hypotheses about the volume of trade and its composition. These hypotheses are examined empirically for a sample of fourteen industrial countries during the post-war period.. The examination relies on cross-country comparisons as well as on comparisons of the group of countries at different points of time. The data seems to be consistent with the hypotheses.
