We first present a theoretical discussion which argues that the form of within-period preferences and the way these differ across consumers may have important consequences for the formulation and specification of intertemporal models. We then apply this methodology to a detailed study of disaggregate household expenditure patterns using a pooled cross-section of some 70,000 households across 15 years. Our objective is to assess the degree of intertemporal substitution across different household types avoiding aggregation bias and accounting for nonadditive within-period preferences and nonlinearity in Engel curves. 000268358 546__ $$aEnglish 000268358 650__ $$aConsumer/Household Economics 000268358 650__ $$aDemand and Price Analysis 000268358 650__ $$aFinancial Economics 000268358 700__ $$aBlundell, Richard 000268358 700__ $$aBrowning, Martin 000268358 700__ $$aMeghir, Costas 000268358 8560_ $$fweidm015@umn.edu 000268358 8564_ $$91856522f-2aa3-45b1-80a7-23a8a65cbc1b$$s26127117$$uhttps://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/268358/files/twerp324.pdf 000268358 909CO $$ooai:ageconsearch.umn.edu:268358$$pGLOBAL_SET 000268358 913__ $$aBy depositing this Content ('Content') in AgEcon Search, I agree that I am solely responsible for any consequences of uploading this Content to AgEcon Search and making it publicly available, and I represent and warrant that: I am either the sole creator and the owner of the copyrights and all other rights in the Content; or, without obtaining another’s permission, I have the right to deposit the Content in an archive such as AgEcon Search.
