The aim of this study is to verify if the use of this new contract would be appropriate to facilitate the adoption and diffusion of sustainable innovation of an Italian agri-food chain and to strengthen the agricultural role with dealing food processing companies. We focus on Piedmont, an Italian region where a soft wheat supply chain is in continuing evolution but is still very fragmented; indeed the two Producers Organization and one Consortium specialized in grain storage and trade only work around 30% of the grain produced annually. Following the framework of transaction cost we carried out a survey using semi-structured interviews as a qualitative analysis tool to gather the opinions of the primary operators in the Piedmont soft wheat supply chain. Initial results suggest that there is still an unsatisfactory horizontal coordination in the supply chain and that the network contract still seems to be little known and appreciated. However operators of the production stage of the chain consider the goals of improving the quality of the wheat and the economic and environmental sustainability very important but they think it would be difficult to achieve them simultaneously. 000258168 546__ $$aEnglish 000258168 650__ $$aAgribusiness 000258168 6531_ $$awheat; network contract; supply chain; economic sustainability 000258168 700__ $$aMancuso, Teresina 000258168 700__ $$aBaldi, Lucia 000258168 700__ $$aPeri, Massimo 000258168 700__ $$aBlandino, Massimo 000258168 700__ $$aReyner, Amedeo 000258168 720__ $$aSchiefer, Gerhard$$eeditor 000258168 720__ $$aRickert, Ursula$$eeditor 000258168 720__ $$aDeiters, Jivka$$eeditor 000258168 8560_ $$fulb20a@uni-bonn.de 000258168 8564_ $$9c5ea4806-2417-4ff4-8203-7d73ee62d557$$s930067$$uhttps://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/258168/files/28-Mancuso_LBalMPerMBlaARey12042017.pdf 000258168 909CO $$ooai:ageconsearch.umn.edu:258168$$pGLOBAL_SET 000258168 913__ $$aBy depositing this Content ('Content') in AgEcon Search, I agree that I am solely responsible for any consequences of uploading this Content to AgEcon Search and making it publicly available, and I represent and warrant that: I am either the sole creator and the owner of the copyrights and all other rights in the Content; or, without obtaining another’s permission, I have the right to deposit the Content in an archive such as AgEcon Search.
