BIOGRAPHY
Joseph Havlicek, Jr., received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural
Economics from The Ohio State University in 1955 and 1956, respectively.
He received the Ph.D. degree jointly in Agricultural Economics and Statistics from North Carolina State University in 1959.
Upon graduation, he was an agronomic-economic/resource economics analyst with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). In 1961, He joined the faculty of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University. In 1974, he accepted a position as professor of Agricultural Economics and Statistics at Virginia Tech. His often cited econometrics lecture notes were developed during this period.
He was Chairman of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Maryland from 1982 to 1984. From 1984 to 1990, he was chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology at The Ohio State University.
Dr. Havlicek served as president of SAEA in 1984, as president of AAEA in
1987, and was elected a fellow of AAEA in 1989.
He died from cancer at the age of 59 in 1993.
Dr. Havlicek was a member of Sigma Xi and Gamma Sigma Delta.
