Using a multiple-output cost framework and panel data on 96 universities over two decades this article examines whether economies of scope and/or scale are present in university production of three major life science research outputs: journal articles, patents, and doctorates. The results show strong evidence of significant economies of scope between articles and patents and economies of scale in article and patent production, suggesting that larger universities have distinct cost advantages in the production of high quality research outputs. 000201548 650__ $$aFood Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety 000201548 650__ $$aResearch and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies 000201548 650__ $$aResearch Methods/Statistical Methods 000201548 700__ $$aFoltz, Jeremy D. 000201548 700__ $$aBarham, Bradford L. 000201548 700__ $$aKwansoo, Kim 000201548 8564_ $$97c886de3-a14f-40ec-ae56-50127eeb45df$$s596636$$uhttps://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/201548/files/wp2003-1.pdf 000201548 887__ $$ahttp://purl.umn.edu/201548 000201548 909CO $$ooai:ageconsearch.umn.edu:201548$$pGLOBAL_SET 000201548 912__ $$nSubmitted by Abigail Porter (porte542@umn.edu) on 2015-04-13T19:11:19Z No. of bitstreams: 1 wp2003-1.pdf: 596636 bytes, checksum: cc3b52c9369877d56c3d10d04d3f0c67 (MD5) 000201548 912__ $$nMade available in DSpace on 2015-04-13T19:11:19Z (GMT).
