In recent years, the Philippines has witnessed a profusion of information and communication technology (ICT) interventions expected to increase Filipino famers’ access to rice farming information, led by the PhilRice Farmers’ Text Center. Despite these initiatives, the digital divide further excludes the marginalized. Drawing from literature on ICT for development (ICT4D) and recent trends in Philippine ICT, this paper proposes policy directions that can be pursued by the agriculture sector for more relevant ICT interventions (i.e., making technology generation participatory, marrying of disciplines, exploring technological hybrids, focusing on critical evaluation of ICTs, and tapping farmers’ children as infomediaries). It is essential to engage farmers in various stages (i.e., from design to evaluation) of ICT initiatives. 000199324 650__ $$aAgricultural and Food Policy 000199324 650__ $$aResearch and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies 000199324 650__ $$aTeaching/Communication/Extension/Profession 000199324 700__ $$aManalo IV, Jaime A. 000199324 700__ $$avan de Fliert, Elske 000199324 773__ $$q16$$o26$$tAsian Journal of Agriculture and Development$$j08$$k2$$d2012 000199324 8564_ $$96cd7b4f0-eedf-4fa9-86d0-b4aca128c23d$$s674851$$uhttps://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/199324/files/AJAD_2011_8_2_2Manalo.pdf 000199324 887__ $$ahttp://purl.umn.edu/199324 000199324 909CO $$ooai:ageconsearch.umn.edu:199324$$pGLOBAL_SET 000199324 912__ $$nSubmitted by Avril Madrid (ajad@agri.searca.org) on 2015-03-06T22:23:09Z No. of bitstreams: 1 AJAD_2011_8_2_2Manalo.pdf: 674851 bytes, checksum: e33f65502a41924f34a31ff4a02e8119 (MD5) 000199324 912__ $$nMade available in DSpace on 2015-03-06T22:23:10Z (GMT).
