Abstract

Coastal locations are traditional hotspots for tourism and leisure activity. The economic growth experienced in Ireland since the mid 1990s, coupled with an increased focus on health, leisure and improved lifestyle has contributed to an increase in participation in marine water-based activities (WBA). This paper examines the demand for and value of WBA offered by companies in the West of Ireland. Using parameter estimates derived from a truncated negative binomial model travel cost model (TCM), this paper derives consumer surplus for WBA participants. The paper found that participants place a high value on commercial WBA located along the West coast of Ireland.
