Abstract
Products made from GM canola need wide consumer acceptance to be commercialised. This
study aims to investigate whether or not Western Australian consumers would be willing to
consume GM canola products, and how much they would be willing to pay for them. A
survey covering 500 randomly selected Western Australians was made. Preliminary results
show that more than 50% of consumers would buy non-GM canola oil, even if it costs one
dollar more than the GM canola oil. It was suggested that the Australian Commonwealth and
State Governments should establish adequate labelling of GM products, in order to increase
consumers’ awareness. Further socio-economic research is required on GM crops.
