Abstract

From time to time, mainly in the field of action of the so-called human and social sciences, notions are instituted, culled, re-designed or they re-emerge with renewed impetus in the intellectual debate. That is what seems to be occurring with the concept of development, now emphasized in its dimension of territoriality associated with a view of sustainability and as a foundation for the exercise of citizenship rights. This work seeks to contribute timidly to that reflection. For such it employs a brief bibliographic review and a critical analysis of the social-economic and environmental reality under the prism of sustainability and citizenship in countries and regions in developing stage, above all in Brazil.
