Abstract

The study introduces several simple calculations to investigate how heating with straw pellet is utilised, considering that natural gas and wood are the most commonly and widely used heating materials. Based on bibliographical references it can be stated that the Hungarian agriculture has the potential resources to use straw as a raw material for pellet heating. Mid-term calculations based on operation costs and using current prices question whether it is an advantageous decision for the households to choose straw-pellet furnace or not. In case straw pellet is used as heating material, real return occurs in the 4th year, compared to furnaces operating with natural gas. During the investigations data were collected and processed; the costs of a complete pellet-making machinery row were calculated. Results show that the static return of pellet-production as an activity can be forecasted to the 4th year and the dynamic return of pellet-production is in the 7th. Is has been concluded that based on research results, straw pellet heating is competitive compared to natural gas heating that offers a similar warmth comfort level. Is has also been concluded that supposing a well-established market, there is a good investment possibility for the production of straw pellet.
