Abstract

The surplus production of wheat and barley forces the produser in die Western Cape to seek alternatives because a future marketing system, which due to influences of GATT and deregulation, may not accomodate the cost of these surplusses caused by the geografical disadvantages of this region. The quest for an alternative energy-source to replace maize, which is to expensive due to the cost of transport, is an alternative for the Western Cape. The initial stages of the implimentation of this industry is well on the way, but attention should still be given to those critical factors that insure the success and continuity of such an industry.
