The important role played by women and the potential to fulfil an even greater role, has been overlooked to a large extent in South Africa. Although there are numerous organisations and projects aimed at development at rural and community level - from development in small scale family enterprises to larger commercial enterprises to professional and leadership positions - very little attention has been payed to the role of the woman and the enhancement thereof. An awareness of the importance of development of women has started to surface, and more is been done to accommodate women and raise them to the level they deserve. Women's perception of themselves are changing, and they are venturing beyond traditional female boundaries. They must however be afforded the chance to develop and have equal access to opportunities at all levels in the South African society
