Abstract

The objective of this research is to calculate the CASI (Feeding costs on income) indicator in sheep production units in the tropical region of Puebla, Mexico, to determine the economic efficiency of food, in relation to the value of production. For the calculation of the CASI indicator we measured the cost of feeding and the value of production, under two considerations; without the use of technological innovations and the use of these. The technological innovations considered were maize stubble ensilage, creep feeeding, complete diets for the fattening stage and diets for females in the gestation and lactation stages. Also was valorated the inclusion the urea in traditional diets for sheep from the Puebla region, Mexico. The CASI indicator was evaluated in 4 livestock production units at first, and later in a family production unit in the eastern central region of the state of Puebla, where it was obtained that the incorporation of technological innovations associated with food allow to improve the productive behavior of animals. Under the conditions of this research, the incorporation of technologies decreased (P<0.05) the cost of feeding, increased (P<0.05) the value of production, and decreased (P<0.05) the CASI value, profit margin increased.
