Abstract

Retail trade, being an important sector of the state economics and an essential part of the space and economy of cities, has been changing dynamically and profoundly since the beginning of the system transformation in Poland. The aim of this thesis is to present forms and types of retail trade, which take shape of store sales in cities, as well as to indicate its significance as a part of city space, its image and functions. Particular attention has been paid to the development of modern commercial buildings in big city agglomerations and small towns up to 50,000 inhabitants. The thesis is based on research literature, statistical data, consulting companies’ reports, and on the outcomes of surveys carried out by public institutions.
