Abstract

The rural development in Spain cannot be understood without taking into account the LEADER approach. For 23 years, this method has been a part of the policies promoted by the EU, implementing the activity of Local Action Groups (LAG) into rural sectors and becoming one of the most important tools for development. This paper focuses on analyzing the representation of LAGs through the composition of their governing bodies. Aside from highlighting the obvious regional and territorial differences found in these bodies, the new programming period grants us, until 2020, more time to improve in the inclusion of important groups, such as women’s and youth groups, as well as in encouraging openness to members of the productive sector, who contribute to revitalizing the work performed by each LAG.
