Abstract

Two experiments were conducted on fertilization of green pepper in two areas of the province of La Vega, Dominican Republic. One area corresponds to the lowland, Ponton, 97 meters above sea level (masl) and the other to Jarabacoa (566 masl). The climate and soil vary from one area to another. The objective was to assess the effect of the dosage of bocashi on yields of green peppers with the purpose of providing recommendations for small farmers in the area. During the experiment at Ponton, a randomized block design was used with six treatments and five replications. The treatments ranged from zero to 25 t/ha preplant application of bocashi. Positive response was obtained, up to 25 t/ha of bocashi. At Jarabacoa, unlike at Ponton, bocashi treatments were compared with and without additional chemical fertilizers. A factorial design with two levels was used: A) dose of bocashi (0-5-ΙΟ- Ι 5 t/ha), and B) adding chemical NPK (0-0-0 and 50-50-50 kg/ha N-P205-K20). The setting was eight treatments plus a control consisting of 120-50-50 on kg/ha/cycle N-P20s-K20. Both experiments were performed between 2006 and 2007 reducing to minimum the application of agrochemicals. We found fertilizer response at the Ponton area, whereas at Jarabacoa yields were higher than the ones in Ponton, but there were no statistical differences between the treatments.
