A fenntartható fejlődésnek mint fogalomnak alapvető feladata az Európai Unióban meghatározott és elérendő célként megfogalmazott ismérvek felvázolása és a figyelemfelhívás a fenntartható fejlődés fontosságára. Az Európai Unió speciális helyet foglal el a nemzetközi szervezetek között, mert a világ legintegráltabb nemzetközi gazdasági közössége, nemcsak kormányközi megállapodás a tagállamok között, hanem sokkal több, hiszen a tagállamok átruházták szuverenitásuk egy részét az Európai Unióra úgy, hogy egyetlen tagállammá alakultak volna. Az EU fenntartható fejlődési stratégiájaként a 21. századi oktatási trendeknek igazodniuk kell a fenntartható fejlődés biztosítására kidolgozott nevelési és oktatási programokhoz. A 21. század feladatai közé kell sorolni az oktatásnak a fenntartható fejlődés érdekében történő átszervezését és egy teljesen új oktatási szemlélet kialakítását. A fenntartható fejlődés eléréséhez a leghatékonyabb módszer az, hogy valóságközelivé váljon, de a meglévő programok irányultságának és színvonalának javítása is elengedhetetlen. A fenntarthatóság tudománya arra törekszik, hogy a tudományt a szükségletek kielégítésére fejlessze ki. A fenntartható fejlődést szolgáló oktatás elsődleges feladata az életre vonatkozó ismereteink fejlesztése. A fenntarthatóság a valódi cél, amelyhez szükség van a közösség minden tagjának az elhivatottságára, ami viszont csak az oktatáson keresztül valósulhat meg. ------------------------------------------ The main purposes of the notion sustainable development are the outline of the criteria that are determined as aims to be achieved in the European Union and the call for the importance of the sustainable development. The European Union takes a special place among the international organizations because it is the most integrated economic community of the world for the reason that it is not only an intergovernmental agreement among the member states but much more as the member states transferred a part of their sovereignty to the European Union without transforming to one member state. I emphasize – as the EU strategy of the sustainable development – that the education trend of the 21st century has to follow the educational and pedagogical programmes that have been worked out for the sustainable development; I draw attention to the emphasized importance of the role of the Öko-schools. The Öko-school network plays a significant role among the educational institutions. For the sake of the sustainable development, the reorganization of education belongs to the duties of the 21st century and a brand-new educational attitude has to be developed. In order to reach the sustainable development the most effective method is – in order to bring it to the reality – the improvement of the tendency and the level of the still existing programmes. The science of sustainability seeks to develop the science to meet the needs. The main duty of education that serves the sustainable development is the improvement of our knowledge regarding life. The real target is sustainability for which the vocation of all members of the community is needed that can only be realized through education.
