Abstract

A simulation model was developed to model the optimization problem of finishing pig delivery weights. The model was developed following a participatory problem analysis of the decision problem, to align the model as much as possible with the needs and expectations of the stakeholders. It’s functioning was tested by simulating different management strategies (i.e. finishing different sex combinations), in which differences in animal performance provoke different optima at the level of the animal and of a pig place per unit of time. The model’s results align with the findings of past studies modelling the delivery weight decision problem.
