Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine prospects for the conservation of native breeds of farm animals with the development of the bioeconomy. A close relationship was found between the number of animals included in the conservation programme and the amount of financial support for the breeders. An enormous role in this respect is played by EU payments through the agri-environmental programmes. Domestic animal genetic resources can form the basis of the bioeconomy, and the profitability of rearing can be improved by using them for regional products and for preserving the non-productive functions of the farms (renewal of ecosystems, biodiversity and cultural heritage). This is conditional on mobilizing market-oriented financial support and on good collaboration between the scientific community, breeders, local governments and small processing plants in order to take concerted action to promote such solutions.
