Abstract
Food scandals that occurred at the turn of the century and in recent years have resulted in increased
interest of European consumers in all aspects of food safety and quality. Number of consumers purchasing
products derived from natural crops and livestock, which have not undergone industrial processing has
been increasing. The interest in local food products has been growing as well. This article presents results
of studies which aim at determining the attitudes and behaviors of producers and consumers of local food.
Based on the conducted studies it is stated that attitudes and behaviors do not result from the current
trends, but from the awareness of the benefits from consuming safe food. Growing interests of consumers
in local food and ability of producers to meet this demand, creates opportunities to strengthen producers
competitiveness and expand business.
