Abstract

Landings and prices of many species of fish follow fairly regular cycles. The msot apparent are the 12-month or seasonal cycles, induced generally by a combination of natural factors, for example, weather and spawning cycles. There are also indications of longer cycles, although their causes are some-what mroe obscure. Nonetheless, both the seasonal and the longer cycles can be measured with some precision with the use of harmonic analysis, which is especially suited to the study of rhythms and repititions (whether in music or economics). Cycles are, or should be, the concern of all connected with our fisheries-- from the fishermen to the conservationist planner.
