Abstract

We examine key features of the adoption of water-efficient irrigation technologies in the Punjab region in India. Results show that the government would have to incur significant costs to induce adoption of water-saving practices. However, the cost-effectiveness of water-saving policies is enhanced if farmers anticipate the long-term benefits to water table. In combination these results suggest a low cost-effectiveness of policies supporting efficient irrigation systems.
