Abstract
This paper reviews the origin of the International Agribusiness bachelor degree program (LAI)
offered by the University of Veracruz (UV). Background information that led to the proposal is
revisited; similar programs currently offered in Mexico are analyzed, and highlighted the
features offered by the LAI-UV program. The goal of this program is to position the University
of Veracruz as a leader in human resource training for agribusiness in southeastern Mexico. We
identified 13universitiesoffering a similar agribusiness degree program, although operating
under nine different names; they share several features in their curricula. All programs aim to
develop common competencies such as, agricultural marketing, business administration,
design and evaluation of productive projects, and organization of producer groups. It is
concluded that the program of LAI-UV can fill a niche in education in a region where the
primary sector activities are particularly important.
