Abstract
Despite the merits of U.S. agriculture and food system, consumer
concerns about food safety and environmental quality continue.
These concerns have stimulated attention by both producers
and consumers to organically grown foods. A Georgia survey
found that three fifths of the respondents preferred organically
grown produce and that fear of chemical residues was the most
important reason for this preference. Even so, many production
and marketing problems prevail. No more than 3 percent of the
nation's produce production is certified organic produce.
