A implantação dos sistemas agro-florestais por alguns atores e setores sociais e suas instituições de apoio e a formulação sobre o Desenvolvimento Local Sustentável discutidos neste artigo, visam contribuir para o aprofundamento do conhecimento sobre aqueles sistemas, que conciliam o cultivo de alimentos com plantios florestais e alternativas de desenvolvimento, a fim de subsidiar a elaboração de estratégias para a agricultura e setor florestal brasileiros. Inclui uma reflexão sobre os Sistemas Agro-florestais e formulações sobre esta e outras práticas sócio-ambientais e relações sócio-econômicas e político-institucionais que buscam contribuir efetivamente na resolução de desigualdades sócio-econômicas e de degradação ambiental existentes nestes dois importantes setores da economia brasileira. Articulado á um programa de pesquisa multidisciplinar mais amplo, a análise destes temas visa contribuir para o acúmulo de conhecimentos sobre os sistemas agro-florestais e sua possível ampliação se os atores e setores sociais e públicos assim o desejarem e atuarem com participação efetiva em sua elaboração e implementação. Espera-se que uma vez compreendidas e estendidas para outras áreas com as devidas qualificações e adaptações nos projetos e políticas públicas que optem por promovê-los, com a tecnologia adequada para cada região ou comunidade específica tais como os assentamentos de reforma agrária, fragmentos restantes de matas nativas nos diferentes biomas brasileiros, etc., tais experiências, assim como processos de Desenvolvimento Local Sustentável, contribuam para transformações necessárias em algumas práticas vigentes na agricultura tradicional e no setor florestal do país, que possam atender aos diferentes produtores rurais que atuam nestes setores, principalmente à agricultura familiar, e promover processos viáveis de Desenvolvimento Local (ou regional) Sustentáveis.------------------------------------------------The discussion of the Agro-forestry Systems promoted by some actors and their support institutions and the formulations about the Local and Sustainable Development in this article are aimed at helping in the accumulation and deepening of knowledge about these new agro-forestry practices, which allows the joint cultivation of food and tree planting, seeking to contribute to the formulation of sustainable alternatives for the agricultural and forest sectors in Brazil. It includes the discussion of agro-forestry systems and the new socio-environmental practices and socioeconomic and institutional relations developed for the design of such practices and processes of Local and Sustainable Development that works toward the reduction of social, economic, political inequalities and environmental degradation in the different ecosystems, biomes and regions of this country. Articulated to a larger research project involving different social actors, universities and research institutes, the discussion of the agro-forestry systems and the formulation on the Local and Sustainable Development seek to contribute to the implementation of such practices in the different regions and countries. It is hoped that when supported by research, extension and other institutions, the agro-forestry systems can be extended to other areas, biomes and ecosystems, with the appropriate technologies, qualifications and adaptations to different realities, and contribute to changes in the traditional agro-silvicutural practices and/or of paradigms for the different kinds of producers in the agricultural and forest sectors in Brazil, specially the family agriculture and viable processes o Local (or regional) and Sustainable Development.
