Abstract

The paper gives an overview of the impact of new technologies on the performance of the farm and food system in the United States. A theoretical framework is outlined. Two major technological frontiers are then discussed. Microbiological breakthroughs are representative of technologies which shift the production function. Computer and communication advances help management by reducing transaction costs. These and other new technologies are discussed at each level of the farm and food system. Key policy issues and future research topics are finally addressed.
