Abstract: This study examines means of improving efficiency of the transportation portion of the export wheat handling system in the southern Plains. Analysis focuses on the feasibility of restructuring grain handling facilities to accommodate unit train movements to port locations. To accomplish this, a cost-minimizing network flow model was developed. Results show that the alternative transportation systems would have substantial effects on costs, wheat flow patterns and the economic variability of certain members of the grain handling and storage industry.
