Abstract

This paper aimed to identify the barriers to mobility in the agribusiness of pork from southern Brazil, considering the strictly coordinated subsystem. There were used as methodological strategy for collecting data, 26 semi-structured interviews with pig farmers in the Western region of Paraná and 6 interviews with experts and agricultural industries of Paraná and Santa Catarina. The results show as barriers to entry the availability for effectuation of the contract with the agribusiness, obtaining environmental licenses, the availability of manpower, the high value of the initial investment in construction and equipment, and the availability of working capital. Asset specificity and the degree of dependence of the revenue of the activity are barriers to exit. Restrictions on mobility for the execution of contracts with other integrators were also identified. It is concluded that mobility barriers present in the agro-industrial system of pork influence on structure of pig production and are associated with the presence of market power on the part of the integrator.
