Abstract

The small farm in the region of Evora, one of the actors to whom they are directed many and varied government programs comes from a family that inherited a piece of land or works with other relatives, attend temporal properties, most of them with surface areas less than 15 hectares, sell their products in bulk, at market price. Most of them do not have their own machinery and those who possess it only perform obsolete equipment adaptations. It is proposed to operate within a Research University Center Rural Enterprise Services that fosters innovation, stimulating learning and productive efficiency, where contributions from research are used to spread the technical progress as a necessary condition for the survival of the production units and, in that way, increase competitiveness and innovation capacities in the most backward producers, so this paper seeks a model for those producers to achieve competitiveness through education and training of the family unit. The methodology is qualitative, through social research techniques: semi-structured interviews to representatives of producer organizations and institutions driving technological development, and individual producers. This is expected to contribute to regional development, and start construction of an emerging innovation system, contribute to the formation and training of producers in the region and strengthen ties between the university and the producers.
