Abstract

The institutional changes which took place by 1990 forced the players operating on the Brazilian wheat chain to segment their products in a way to compete with the imported products. This process demanded the establishment of a new classification system for the wheat quality. This paper aims to explain how the new quality standards impacted on transaction costs, and therefore, on the governance structures which regulated the transactions on the Brazilian market. With this goal this paper will be referring to theoretical approaches related to the New Institutional Economics, as the Transaction Cost Economics and the Measurement Cost Economics. It was observed that the quality standards have allowed agents on milling and processing tiers to coordinate the production of wheat without the use of more integrated forms of governance structures.
